The Baseball Career of Cubs’ Shortstop Nico Hoerner

A 21-year-old native of Oakland, California, Hoerner has yet to play a big league game, but was ranked as the No. 86 prospect in all of Major League Baseball (MLB) by Baseball Prospectus prior to the start of the 2019 season. The shortstop was selected 24th overall by the Chicago Cubs in the 2018 MLB Amateur Draft and registered two home runs, six runs batted in (RBI), and a .327 batting average across three minor league levels in his first professional season. Through 18 games this season with Chicago’s Double-A affiliate, the Tennessee Smokies, Hoerner has a single home run, 6 RBI, and a .300 batting average.
The Cubs drafted Hoerner in the first round due to his impressive collegiate career. He played three seasons at Stanford University, where he hit 3 home runs and accumulated 97 RBI to go along with a .305 batting average. He also stole 18 bases in 25 attempts. Hoerner was particularly effective in his final season of college baseball, as he had 40 RBI, 15 stolen bases, and 19 walks against 22 strikeouts. He also had a career-best .349 batting average.
